The development of Locket: A short look back.

While work on Locket only began back in April of 2019, it has still seen its fair share of changes and redesigns throughout its life. There are certain key aspects that have remained, though looking back on the original version of the game shows just how much it has evolved in less than a year.

For example, the earliest version of the game features Dusty with a completely different design, as well as a much less appealing art style. As you can see below, the only map created was empty, featuring a vast amount of repeating grass tiles.

The battle system worked a lot differently in this original version too, featuring a rhythm-based method of attacking. Timing button presses with the music would allow you to dish out multiple hits within a single turn of combat.

While this system relied a lot more on skill as opposed to pure strategy, it made battles extremely slow, and so the idea was scrapped.

Fast forward to August, and the game was already beginning to look a lot more like the version seen today. Originally, all message windows in the battle screen had a checkered pattern, unlike the current version where only the character stats windows display the pattern.

And so, the battle system was redone, graphics redesigned, and the other three party members were introduced. This change made battles run a lot smoother, while also pathing the way for much more strategical battles, forcing the player to plan out how their party’s actions work together.

While I was happy with the way the battle screen looked, I still wasn’t quite happy with the designs for the main characters. Each of them, save for Liam, was given a slight redesign, in order to make the fit the way the rest of the game looked a little better. Liam was, however, made two pixels taller. Because he’s a big boy.

From there all that could really be done was to add more features! Eventually ESP attack functionality was added, allowing for much more powerful attacks at the cost of EP (Which stands for ESP Points). Some additional animations were added as well.

The evolution of the battle system only scratches the surface of Locket’s changes throughout development however! As I previously mentioned, the overworld was a lot different too.

Once the battle system was beginning to become how it looks today, I decided to switch focus on the overworld of the game to make sure it matched the new style the game used. To begin with, all I really had was a small test map with some pretty basic tiles…

Everything was starting to come together, even if I wasn’t particularly happy with the tiles! So, I decided to focus on those. While originally maps were made with tilesets, I decided that maps that took place inside a building would be drawn from scratch, which meant I can create much more unique looking buildings!

This new method certainly takes more time, though I feel it’s worth it to create much more detailed maps!

So! That’s essentially everything that lead up to the current state of the game. It’s been a fun journey to go through, and I can’t wait to see how much more work I get done in the coming year!

Before I finish this post, I’d like to give a big thank you to everyone who’s stuck with me during Locket’s development. Locket’s still a long way from being finished, but it means a lot to see so many people excited to give it a try! So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you all so much for going on this journey with me.

Locket’s soundtrack: A quick preview

A big part of Locket’s appeal is the soundtrack. Created using classic Gameboy Advanced soundfonts, it’s made to feel right at home amongst the retro-style sprite-work of the game’s art style.

Due to the myriad of enemies that appear in the game, I didn’t want to just include a single battle theme that plays throughout every encounter, and so instead each enemy will play a battle theme depending on it’s behaviour! Of course, there are certain themes that will only play during a single fight (Boss fight music, for example,) though you may find some encounters sharing a theme if the enemies are similar enough.

I’ve put together a small preview of some of the musical themes that appear during those in-game battles, so please take a listen! I hope you enjoy!

So… What’s Locket all about?

Hey there! Welcome to the official Locket blog.

So then….

Well, I’m glad you asked! Locket is a goofy, silly and fun little RPG for kids, where you take the role of Dusty, a human boy with the rare ability to use magic! Set in a world where humans and monsters co-exist, you’ll meet a cast of wacky and unique characters, and perhaps even become friends (or, y’know, enemies) with some of them!

A good question!

Let’s see… You can:

Spend quality time with your sibling!

Serve drinks to this stinky weirdo!

Enjoy the view with a friend!

Fight

a bunch

of enemies!

….So basically, a whole ton of fun stuff.

Another great question! While I can’t share too much on characters right now, I can show you the four main characters you’ll get to play as! So then, let’s meet this quirky cast of weirdos!

The ESP-wielding boy, Dusty!

Ayoung and curious boy, Dusty is a rare human born with the ability to use ESP powers, a special type of magic usually only usable by monsters! Dusty specialises in healing ESP, and always uses it to help others where he can!

While he tries his best to act tough and strong, Dusty’s actually a little cowardly. Make sure you take care of him, okay?

The star pupil, Polly!

Polly is always trying her best to impress those around her, something she doesn’t have much trouble doing thanks to her expert knowledge of Elemental ESP! She can summon fireballs to thunderstorms, all with the power of her mind!

Her dads are both teachers at the local school, and couldn’t be prouder of their daughter’s incredible abilities!

The technological genius, Anna!

A monster born unable to use ESP, Anna focuses most of her time tinkering on machinery! What she lacks in magic, she more than makes up with her gadgets and gizmos!

She’s a little shy, but once she opens up she’s one of the friendliest cyclops you’ll ever meet!

The shifty stray, Liam!

After retiring from life as a goon for the local mob, Liam has decided instead to focus on righting the wrongs he’s caused. As a werewolf, he has incredible physical abilities, though his defensive ESP abilities are definitely not to be overlooked!

Just… Try not to make him angry.

So! Those are the four party members you’ll meet in Locket! Now, time for one more question!

Ah. The big money question.

Well, at this point in time, It’s pretty much impossible to say for sure! Due to the amount of work game development takes, especially as a one-woman dev team, I can’t just give away the game for free, but also I want it to be affordable for the amount of game play you’ll get! So, in short, I… don’t actually know. Not yet, at least.

However! My current plan for now is to release a demo for the game once I’ve finished up to the first boss! I can’t say when it’ll be done, but it’ll be FREE! We all like free things, right? Right.

Well, that’s about all I can say for now! I’m definitely thinking of doing more update posts like this as the game progresses, with hopefully much more to showcase as more of the game is built! For now, though, thank you for reading, and I hope you’re looking forward to playing Locket eventually!
